LA-based Thebe Neruda Kgositsile, more commonly known as Earl Sweatshirt, is an American hip hop artist that is well-rounded in all trades. At only the tender age of 22, the superstar has already left an impression on today’s rap and hip hop community, working alongside artists such as Mac Miller, Vince Staples, Frank Ocean and many more. While typically associated with Tyler, the Creator and the OFWGKTA crew, Earl Sweatshirt has created his own name for himself since releasing his first mixtape ‘Earl’ at only 16 years old. After the release of the tape and during much of Odd Future’s rise to fame, Earl took a brief hiatus from the scene, only to return in 2013 with his debut full-length, ‘Doris’. With his sophomore effort ‘I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside: An Album by Earl Sweatshirt’, he managed to pull numbers with no marketing, as the album’s iTunes pre-order arrived without prior announcement and his YouTube stream had over 100,000 views in the first 24 hours. With this discography and plenty of unreleased tracks in his live setlists, he is truly an artist to look forward to at this year’s Ottawa Bluefest. Catch Earl Sweatshirt at the City Stage on July 9th.
